Expectations:

Band students must have their Music Folder with them for every class.

Band members are expected to adhere to the policies of the school as well as the band.

Students are expected to actively participate. Music can only be assessed through performance!

Students are expected to work towards self-improvement through practice outside of the classroom and active participation in class.

Students are graded on the preparation of the material that we are rehearsing. Students are expected to bring all of their required equipment to school. (Music, Instrument, and Effort!)

Students are expected to properly maintain their instruments. I will inspect instruments regularly to ensure proper care and maintenance.

Students are expected to attend ALL rehearsals! Because the school schedule does not allow complete band rehearsal during the school-day, some after-school rehearsals are necessary. After-school-buses will be available for students @4:30pm.

Students WILL respect eachother and Band Facilities and Equipment. I will not allow a student to abuse another, verbally, emotionally or physically. And, the band room and its equipment will be treated with care and respect.

Band Objectives:

1. TONE

2. RHYTHMIC ACCURACY

3. ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE

4. BALANCE

5. MUSICAL EXPRESSION

The study of instrumental music at the middle school level can be an extremely enriching and rewarding experience for students.  Young musicians gain much more than just musical skills; they are required to be well-prepared for class each day and have the responsibility of long-term practicing and preparation for public concerts.  New friendships are formed, and students can gain confidence and higher self-esteem.  Most importantly, students learn the beautiful art of music, giving them an outlet for self-expression and fulfillment throughout their lives.

Grading:

In-Class Participation
Preparation for Class
Playing and Written Quizzes/Weekly Practice Logs
Musical Achievement
Extra Credit:  Attendance to Outside Musical Performances

Weekly Practice Logs are recorded as 50% of the written quiz grade. These logs are due the final class meeting of the week. I will accept late practice logs, but I will not accept them without a parent signature.

Written tests and playing quizzes will receive a numerical grade. Playing tests and practice logs will receive a letter grade and will be converted to a numerical grade. Work that is not turned in will be counted as a '"0" until made up in or after class. I accept late work, so No Excuses.

Example of an A+ BAND Student:

1. Demonstrates superior work in daily rehearsals, and is always prepared with music, fingerings, and good rehearsal technique.
2. Always works to the best of their ability in daily rehearsals to obtain the highest in performance standards.
3. Is able to work effectively with teachers, and classmates and can work independently or with members of a section when needed. Can function as a leader if necessary.
4. Is on time and attentive.
5. Always attends after school rehearsals and performances.
6. Has correct music, pencil and equipment at all times.

It's just like having a conversation, you know? I mean, you have your exclamation marks, your question marks, your periods. And that's the same thing with music. You have to punctuate. - McCoy Tyner
